"Mine" by Taylor Swift

Oh, oh
Oh, oh

You were in college, working part time, waiting tables
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk, with a fear of fallin’
Wonderin’ why we bother with love, if it never lasts

I say, can you believe it?
As we’re lyin’ on the couch
The moment I can see it,
Yes, yes, I can see it now

Do you remember we were sittin’ there by the water
You put your arm around me, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Flash forward and we’re taking on the world together
And there’s a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded
You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes

But we’ve got bills to pay
We’ve got nothing figured out
When it was hard to take
Yes, yes, this is what I thought about

Do you remember we were sittin’ there by the water
You put your arm around me, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Do you remember all the city lights on the water
You saw me start to believe, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

Oh, oh
And I remember that fight, 2:30am
You said everything was slippin’ right out of our hands
I ran out cryin’ and you followed me out into the street

Brace myself for the goodbye, cause that’s all I’ve ever know
And you took me by surprise
You said I’ll never leave you alone
You said
I remember how we felt sittin’ by the water
And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time
I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter
She is best thing that’s ever been mine

Hold on, you’ll make it last
Hold on, never turn back

You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing that’s ever been mine

(Hold on) do you believe it?
(Hold on) We’re gonna make it now
(Hold on) I can see it
(Yeah, yeah) I can see it now

  1. At first, I will admit I did not like the song as I felt, and still do, like it strays too far from her country sound and wanders off to the world of pop music. Before any of you Swift haters say anything, yes she has always-I say “always” as if she has been around for many years- had heavy pop influence in her music, but you must agree that she does also have a country sound to her songs, though it seems her music seems to get less and less country each time a new single is released. Anyway, at first "Mine" sounded like a typical Swift song like "Tim McGraw" or “Fearless”, but then after a few lines I thought the song just turned into icky mush. However, let's start with the positives so the Taylor Swift lovers don't hate me for life. I like the story the song tells, going beyond the usual love story, no pun intended, Swift usually sings. "Mine" is more realistic as it is about the good and bad times in a relationship. This is a pretty big thing because country music should be a real, or at least believable, story that is sung from deep within. Another thing I like is that instruments don't overpower or take control of “Mine” for most of the song. However, this leads to the not-so-good stuff of the song such as that during the chorus she becomes the background music instead of the instruments, the instruments become more dominant---a big no no for a country song. Her voice dominates the song when not singing the chorus when it should be the main sound throughout the whole song. Now that I have given a some good and bad aspects of the song as a country song I would like to say three things. First off, “Mine” may not be the greatest country song but it is a good one, the song did feel better as a country song after I watched the video for it…it really is a pretty good video that helps create a better country feel for it, and the song is great!!...the biggest problem I have with it is the instruments and the pop sound but it is not that big.
In case I confused everyone, because I am too sleepy to follow what I write-yes I know, shame on me for saying that, here is a basic summary of what I wanted to say:
    1)”Mine” is a good song
    2) I look forward to buying “Speak Now” (I buy the physical cd in case you wanted to know)
    3) Swift creates a nice blend of country and pop, though for those diehard country fans I will say stick to Strait and Merle

    Nice job Ms. Swift.

Interesting thought that just came to me: what would a duet with Taylor Swift and George Strait be like? Something we wil probably never know.
